Sustainability

Sustainability is broadly defined as meeting the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.  This definition comes from the 1987 Report of the World Commission on Environment and Development to the United Nations.

While this definition is not necessarily the only definition of sustainability, it is widely used as a starting point to understanding how we can work together to improve our world.

It imagines the world as an interconnected diagram based around environmental, economic and social "pillars." 

Concrete blocks are an excellent product for promoting sustainability.  Manufactured locally from natural resources, and easily recycled, concrete blocks are the most basic green building materials available.  Concrete blocks are rot and pest resistant, and provide strong structures able to resist severe weather events.  Structures built with concrete blocks are still structurally sound decades longer than other building materials.

Going Green!

We have joined the USGBC (United States Green Building Council) and joined our local chapter, the Piedmont Triad (NC) Chapter.  We are excited to get involved with promoting concrete blocks, a naturally green building product, as a viable part of sustainable construction.

Currently, the emphasis on “green” building has been limited to commercial and institutional construction, but new guidelines for the LEED certification are being released in late April 2009 which should positively impact the residential market as well.  We will keep updating our newsletter information and website as information becomes available.
